How to cut your own hair, at home!

24.04.20

While some are dying for a good barista coffee, or for a shopping spree in the nearby mall, we would do anything for a haircut and a professional hairstyling. Staying indoors these days can turn out to be a pretty hard thing to do, causing you feelings of loneliness and anxiety and giving you some bad ideas regarding a change of looks.

Whatever you might want to do, to change your appearance, just stop and think for a moment! Be realist and don’t do anything out of boredom. This is not the time for a change of looks or for experiments regarding your hair color or if you should or should not have bangs. Remind yourself that it may take month to recover from a bad haircut!

Even if it may be hard to look at yourself in the mirror and see that misshaped hair, those undyed roots, those annoying grey hairs and those untamed curls gone wild, this is not the time to do something dramatic. Remind yourself that the lockdown will eventually come to an end and you’ll have professional help to go to. So, lay back, let down the scissors, put the pink hair dye down and think in a realistic manner at the things you can actually do, to look better and improve your state of mind.

I have bangs, what do I do?

Don’t touch it! That would be the first and the best answer for you, because bangs are really difficult to cut and style. Instead, you can think of other ways to style it, so it won’t look weird. You can turn your long bangs into a curtain style bang – a middle-parted bang, to frame your face. You can also style them as a side-parted bang.

If you are really set on cutting your bangs, keep the following in mind: no not trim it while wet, because you might cut it too short, because it will “shrink” when it become dry. If, instead, you cut it dry, you can cut as much as needed because you can see its real length.

Chip into your bangs vertically to create a soft edge and trim them by cutting in small sections. This way you won’t get a blunt line, but a more natural look, by adding some movement to your freshly cut bangs.

My roots have grown, what do I do?

Do not bleach your hair! This is the most important thing to know. Instead you can do a root touch up and hydrating masks to keep your color vibrant. This way you won’t damage your hair and you’ll also give your hair a well-deserved rest till the lockdown is over.

When deciding to color your own hair, keep in mind the following:

  1. Don’t wash your hair two days prior to dying so that your scalp’s natural oils can act as a barrier against irritation.
  2. Always follow the instructions on the box.
  3. Apply the dye a half-inch away from the scalp to the ends and then go back and cover the roots.

I’ve got wavy hair. How can I trim it myself?

You don’t! Trimming hair with lots of volume can be a little challenging, that’s why you’d better invest in some good styling products to tame your curls. Use products meant to collapse the curls a little, so your head won’t look like a messy bush anymore.
