Mask Acne and Ways to Treat It!

08.07.21

The necessity of wearing a face mask while in public spaces has come with some skincare challenges, such as acne, rosacea, redness, itchiness and even contact dermatitis, that some of us have to deal with.

And now that the weather is warmer, we can add perspiration acne and rashes into the mix. All due to sweating and wearing a cloth face mask at the same time, that leads to an oilier skin, clogged pores, and blemishes. But according to dermatologists, there are a few things that we can do to keep the mask acne at bay, that involve a better hygiene and a skincare routine suited for this condition.

  1. Use natural fabrics

If you are not chronically ill, or you are not dealing with a compromised immune system, in which case you need to wear a surgical or medical grade mask that can offer you a higher protection against the COVID virus, you can opt for a fabric mask made out of cotton, because these are more breathable and have a smaller chance of causing skin rashes.

  1. Wash it daily with special detergent

If you’re wearing a cotton face mask, wash it at the end of the day, using hypoallergenic and fragrance-free laundry detergent – baby detergent is also a good, safe option. Also, avoid using fabric softeners when washing your face mask.

  1. Change it twice a day

If you have a busy day and need to wear a mask for a longer period, change it mid-day, wash your face and then use another one. By washing your face twice a day and changing the mask, especially when is hot outside, you increase the chances for your skin to stay healthy and clean.

  1. No makeup is best makeup

If you must wear a mask for a longer period, consider not wearing makeup underneath. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, apply a cream and SPF and you’re good to go.

  1. Follow a routine

Washing your face twice a day is the easiest way of dealing with mask acne. Also, don’t forget that it is really important to use a mild cleanser that will keep your skin barrier intact, while washing away the residues of sweat, spit and breath. After washing your face, don’t forget to moisturize it with the right face cream for your skin type.

  1. Use a quick touch up

To prevent acne from appearing under your mask you can think of investing in some salicylic acid pads or tissues, that you can use throughout the day. This will surely keep acne at bay.

Mask acne can be kept at bay as long as we pay extra attention to our skincare routine. And, while dropping the mask is not an option during pandemic times, there are still some measures we can take to keep our skin healthy looking. How are you dealing with mask acne or sweat acne, due to the heat? Drop us some pointers!
